Board
Elliott Bent is the Treasurer of the Center for Arts and Learning (CAL) Board of Directors. He oversees the board’s financial oversight and works to ensure the organization’s resources are managed responsibly to support CAL’s programs and mission.
Phillip Robertson is the President of the Center for Arts and Learning (CAL) Board of Directors. He provides leadership and strategic guidance to support CAL’s mission of fostering arts, learning, and community engagement in Montpelier, Vermont.
Deb Smoller has been a Monteverdi board member since 2017 and President since 2019. Deb has taught piano lessons for 27 years (bio here) and flute for 18 years. Her early careers in Burlington included work in the nonprofit sector including Flynn Theatre for Performing Arts, Discover Jazz Festival, and Burlington City Arts as well as in the for-profit sector in cinema. More recently Deb spent 6 years with a local/sustainable food organization as operations manager and currently as a manager sub with Hunger Mountain Co-op.
Leanne, whose career started in the klieg lights of Broadway, combined her stage presence with her love of small towns and now holds audiences rapt as she shares her passion for Community Heart & Soul. Leanne has an extensive background in community revitalization including coordinating the Vermont Downtown Program. She was Director and CEO of Erie Downtown Improvement District in Erie, Pennsylvania, where her work included redevelopment of Erie’s Waterfront. In Warren, Pennsylvania, she was Executive Director of Warren Main Street and in Arizona was Executive Director of the Lake Havasu Uptown Association and was appointed to the Arizona Downtown Advisory Council.
Volunteers
Glen Coburn Hutcheson is a Vermont-based artist working in drawing, painting, and sculpture. He is a co-founder of The Front, a cooperative gallery in Montpelier, and holds degrees in painting and sculpture from Haverford College, the New York Studio School, and the International School of Art in Umbria, Italy. Glen creates accessible art for a wide audience while maintaining a sustainable approach to pricing.
Kate Mueller is a Vermont-based artist whose work spans oil, pastel, and abstract painting. She has exhibited widely across the state, including solo shows at Julian Scott Memorial Gallery, Castleton University, and the Chaffee Art Center, and her work is held in private collections nationally and internationally. Trained at Goddard College and the Art Students League in New York, Kate works primarily from life, creating figures, portraits, landscapes, and biomorphic abstractions.
